"The sublime Zalze Shiraz, Mourvedre, Viognier 2007 blend from South Africa (£5.99). These classic grapes of the Rhone create a rich wine of blackberry and raspberry fruit and gentle dark spice.

The Viognier (a white grape) adds an attractive lift to the large body and heavy tannins of its companions. This impressive wine will suit meals of robust red meat excellently"

"Following its success in UK bars and restaurants, where Kleine Zalze claims to be the largest South African wine brand, the winery is now branching out onto the high street with its new Zalze label.

Their philosophy is to combine the fruit flavours and intensity of New World wines with the elegance and structure of the Old World. The result is a deep, spicy Rhone-style blend of Shiraz, Mourvedre, Viognier and a clean, crisp, tropical fruit flavoured Chenin Blanc made from low yielding bush vines. Available in Waitrose £5.99"

Victoria Moore - The Guardian

Zalze Chenin Blanc: "Old vines, new wine. Very young and lively, brimming with pear and apple fruit, but also with Chenin’s rounded nutty-straw and spice flavours. Pure, well-balanced , bright and engaging."

Zalze Shiraz/Mourvedre/Viognier: "Great value here. Rich, smooth, pure dark fruits with a lovely meaty, slightly peppery edge. Good focus and bright acidity supporting the bright fruit, with sweetness as well as a more savoury dimension, too. The Viognier seems to add a floral, slightly peachy/fruity appeal to the nose without making it confected. A really successful wine of great appeal, and worth at least £2 more than the retail price."

Jamie Goode’s wine blog

Zalze Shiraz/Mourvedre/Viognier: "This grape blend has French pedigree, but the succulence, ripeness and soft tannin is all South African. A dash of Viognier in the mix gives perfume and richness."
